Performance Note:

This piece traces a traumatic event, backwards, in hopes of finding closure and clarity. It also demonstrates the all-too-human act of looking back on things we can’t change.

The narrator is free to express but is often modest. The violin functions as a catharsis, intentionally juxtaposed with a reserved presentation of text in order to acknowledge the mental tension and discord.

Depending on performance space, the narrator may use a microphone as needed. Ideally the microphone would be placed at a distance in front of the narrator, to restrain from visions of retail intercoms or George Orwell- preserving a natural speaking tone.

The narrator need not recite in strict time throughout the piece, and both performers should maintain an organic musical line rather than a rigid and metronomic one. Aleatoric changes in note and rest duration are more than acceptable.
